Christine Oxley trained at Reigate School of Art and Design, in Calligraphy, Heraldry and Illumination in the early 1970’s. Since then she has built up a reputation across the country teaching adult education classes including GCSE calligraphy, residential summer schools, primary school workshops and workshops for calligraphy societies teaching a variety of calligraphic hands and design projects.

The main focus of Christine's work has been carrying out commissions for a variety of clients. The Commissions and Gallery pages give an insight into the diversity of commissions.

If you are interested in learning calligraphy, Christine has been giving group tuition on Zoom during the Covid-19 pandemic and this has been a revelation with students able to learn at their own pace from their own homes see the Calligraphy Tuition page for more information. With Covid restrictions lifted and warmer weather, Christine will again be teaching small groups in her Garden Room at her home in Herefordshire.

When life returns to normal after the pandemic you can explore the art of beautiful writing in the lovely rural surroundings of England's secret county, Herefordshire.  Whichever course you follow, you will feel inspired to interpret words, explore new paper surfaces, experiment with colour and different techniques, put pen-like tools to paper and discover the joy of lettering.

I have always enjoyed the marks made by the pen

As a Calligrapher Christine has always enjoyed the marks made by the pen, the feel of the sharp nib against the texture of the paper; the making of a fine page of lettering.Loading a pen with black, black ink and glorious colour you can see the shine of the wet ink upon the page.

Calligraphy is an art that connects the physical and the mental. There is a joy in the making and a contemplative aspect to the art that is calming and stilling in this busy world.

Christine's commissions range from Civic Presentation Scrolls, commissioned by Hereford, Leominster and Ross Council. Books of Remembrance and Donors, commissioned by Hereford Cathedral and The Queen’s Royal Hussars. Poetry Broadsheets, Conservation Work and Family Trees to name just a few.
